I. ORGANIZATION, OBLIGATIONS AND POLICIES
BUNT is a continual ownership simulation league using Diamond Mind Baseball (DMB). BUNT has two leagues – National and American – each with 10 (ten) teams.
The BUNT League Office consists of 2 (two) representatives: a Co-Commissioner/Statistician and a Co-Commissioner/Playoff Coordinator.
The Co-Commissioners
shall oversee the overall BUNT operations including resolution
of disputes and appeals and recruitment of new managers. The Statistician shall
maintain all league databases, penalty points, team rosters, manager contact
information and the league website, www.buntbaseball.net.
ALL BUNT Managers shall
own their own copies of the Version 12b software (as of the 2024 BUNT season)
and the current DMB season database.
GENERAL LEAGUE VOTING PROCEDURES:
When a major BUNT rule needs to be added, removed, or changed for the following season, a ballot will be sent to all league managers. From those ballots, a simple majority of the votes will be needed to change, add, or remove a major rule from the rulebook.
II. SCHEDULES
The regular-season schedule shall consist of 162 games (81 home, 81 away). Managers play only the home games unless requested by the BUNT Statistician to sim their road games. Managers may also play their games head-to-head (H2H) if their opponent agrees. The monthly schedule is 25-28 games. Each team will play between 8 and 18 home games per month.
A self-explanatory schedule file will be sent to each manager, as soon as available, with all deadlines for each month of play clearly indicated.
A Supplemental Manager Profile Information (SMPI) file will be posted to the BUNT page on Groups.io (https://groups.io/g/BUNTBaseballLeague/files) before the season. Managers shall use the SMPI to list their starting pitchers in each series, home and away. The SMPI shall also include all starting pitchers (SP) to be used during a given month and all of that team’s AAA players. The SMPI shall be used during each month of the regular season.
Each series (home & away) during a month does not have
to be played in chronological order based on the BUNT DMB schedule however
managers shall play all games within one series before moving on to the next.
Managers shall reset player usage for both their team and their opponent prior to the start of the first scheduled series in any month (NOTE: this is not required if the first series begins on the 6th of the month or later based on the DMB calendar). Managers are permitted to reset player usage for their team as they begin each new series during a month.
III. STATISTICS
THE LEAGUE STATISTICIAN:
* Shall update/import all statistics sent by each league manager.
*Shall maintain all statistics in databases and modify team/player team/player statistics resulting from game forfeitures and/or grievances.
*Shall upload a new monthly database to the BUNT CURRENT DATABASE folder on groups.io/g/BUNTBaseballLeague/files no earlier than the 24th of each month.
IV. GAMEPLAY PROCEDURES
MGR. PROFILE REQUIREMENTS:
Each GM shall set up a folder at groups.io/g/BUNTBaseballLeague/files with their team name.
Every month, each manager shall prepare a DMB Mgr. Profile (MP) file and an SMPI form and upload them to their Groups.io team folder no later than 11:59 PM local time on the 1st of the month.
Managers shall list ALL SP to be used for the month in the appropriate section of their SMPI and must indicate any usage limits in the SMPI’s Special Player Instructions section.
Under “Special Instructions,” managers shall:
*List any SP who may be used as relievers on the road.
*List any players with usage limits and their specific
limitations (games, ABs PAs, IP).
{New in 2024} When making an MP, managers may farm the SPs listed on their SMPI for that month. However, they shall not activate other non-SPs to fill the roster spots of those SPs not scheduled to appear in a series.
Example: The TWI list 6 SPs on their SMPI and opt to farm them on the MP sent to their road opponents. All of the TWI road series in month “X” are 3 games. The TWI shall not activate 3 batters and/or relievers to “fill” the roster spots left “open” by the 3 SP not scheduled to appear in those series. The TWI active roster, other than the scheduled SPs, shall be limited to:
*20 batters/relievers (April through July)
*The maximum number of active players allowed, less the number of SPs on that team's SMPI (August and September)
Reason: Allowing the road manager extra batters/relievers puts the home manager at a disadvantage. Additionally, it’s not realistic.
Visiting managers may request a player or players be made ineligible
after a specific number of innings or plate appearances. Visiting managers may
not ask home team managers to remove a player or players from a game
in progress to achieve a specific usage limit request or to make any manual
changes of any kind to the computer-controlled team once a game has begun.
NOTE: Visiting mgrs. should bear in mind that series Special Instructions correctly followed by the human mgr. may still cause a player or players to exceed the requested limitations
*Managers shall not begin the playing of any games until
the 2nd of any month.
*Visiting managers are
responsible for farming all players ineligible for all road games.
*Home managers are
responsible for farming ineligible visiting players in the MP, including farming
any SP when they are not scheduled to start in a specific game.
*Away games are to be managed by the DMB computer manager,
as per the visiting team's MP and SMPI form/files submitted for the home team
managers. If a discrepancy OF ANY KIND is noticed on either of these files,
managers must contact the co-commissioners and the opposing manager for
clarification and/or instructions.
*Scheduled HOME games are to be completed with results uploaded to the manager’s Groups.io folder by 11:59 PM local time on the 20th of the month, unless otherwise notified by the Statistician.
NETPLAY
Head-to-head play is strongly encouraged during the postseason> It is also allowed during the regular season.
All NetPlay (H2H) game strategies (regular and post-season) will be utilized at the discretion of the teams/mgrs. involved, regardless of strategies stated on away Mgr. Profiles.
V. DRAFTING
The main draft shall be 15 rounds. It begins on or about
January 8th. It is untimed and conducted via email.
Selection order is determined by reverse order of finish of
all BUNT teams in the prior season. Barring trades or picks lost due to penalty
points, each round will begin with the worst team and end with the reigning
BUNT champion. League-run teams (i.e., those without managers) will draft using
DMB’s AI.
*Non-playoff qualifiers will be assigned draft positions 1-12
{new for 2024}.
*The four {new
for 2024} teams eliminated in the Wild
Card Series will pick 13-16 in reverse order of their
final regular-season records.
*The two teams eliminated in the League Championship Series
will pick 17th and 18th in reverse order of their final
regular-season records.
*The World Series runner-up will pick 19th.
*The World Series champion will pick 20th.
Regular-season forfeits will be reversed when determining draft positioning.
In case of ties in winning percentage, the following tiebreakers
shall decide draft order:
*Worst head-to-head record (if applicable)
*Worst road record
*Team with the worst record in the final 81 games of the season
*Team with the worst record in the final 82 games of the season (provided the game added is not between the tied teams). Continue one game back until the tie is broken.
Prior to the draft, all on-disk free agents shall be listed
alphabetically and assigned a number. Batter numbers will start at 1, pitcher
numbers will start at 400. The lists will be posted to the Groups.io site and
on www.buntbaseball.net. When selecting on-disk players, managers/GMs shall give
that player’s name and number.
Any player, either on-disk or off-disk, may be drafted in
the first 10 (ten) rounds, including players in the minor leagues, college,
high school, players in foreign leagues, etc. When off-disk players are
selected, managers shall provide the player’s:
*Name
*Position
*Date of birth
*Batting and throwing information (e.g., bats left, throws
right)
Players drafted in Rounds 11-15 must be on-disk and have at least 50 IP /150 PA. Players drafted in Rounds 11-15 may not be assigned to a team’s AAA list.
Approximately 24 hours after the 15-round main draft, a Supplemental Draft (SD) will begin. The SD will allow teams to get their rosters up to 40 players. All teams may participate. Teams with full rosters prior to the SD must release players as soon as possible after the main draft in order to take part. The selection order will be the same as the main draft, less any non-participating teams. Players selected in the SD must be on-disk but may be placed on your AAA squad and are not subject to the 50 IP/150 PA requirements.
Free Agent claiming will continue as normal after the SD.
VI. ROSTERS
Rosters shall be a maximum of 40 players. If a trade or free-agent claim takes a team over 40 players, as many players as necessary must immediately be released to return to the limit.
If the main draft takes a team over 40 players, managers/GMs shall have until 11:59 pm local time the day after the draft ends to release as many players as needed to return to the limit. If they fail to do so, that team’s last selection(s) will be released until the team has 40 players.
Active rosters for games played from April through July
shall consist of no more than 26 players. Managers may change players
between road series by uploading different MPs but may not change their
eligible player list during a series, home or away.
Active rosters for games played in August may include all on-disk,
non-AAA players.
Active rosters for games played in September – or for potential one-game playoffs – may include all on-disk players. AAA players created by the Statistician or with no regular-season MLB statistics are not allowed to be active.
VII. AAA PLAYERS
The AAA roster is designed to protect teams’ futures. Each
manager/GM shall submit the names of players to be placed on their AAA roster no
later than April 1 at 11:59 PM local time.
*AAA rosters can be comprised of any combination of on-disk
or off-disk players.
*All off-disk players must be assigned to your AAA roster.
*On-disk AAA players may be activated only in September.
*On-disk AAA players may be active for one-game playoffs.
*On-disk AAA players shall have no more than 150 PA and/or 50 IP (real-life statistics).
*AAA players traded in-season remain AAA players for that season.
*Released on-disk AAA players can be claimed as free agents and will lose their AAA status.
*At the end of the regular season, AAA players automatically become part of a team’s winter protected list.
*AAA players retained after the July 23rd trading/free agent acquisition deadline cannot be released until the end of the regular season.
VIII. FREE AGENTS
Free-agent claims will be processed each month on a worst-to-first basis. Free-agent claims made prior to the start of the regular season will be processed based on the previous draft order.
*Managers shall submit free-agent claims to the Statistician. Claims shall include a list of desired players and a list of those being released.
*If a claim includes multiple players, managers shall rank the desired players in order of preference.
*The Statistician shall confirm the request with the manager then announce the name(s) of the released player(s) via email and post their names to the Transactions section of buntbaseball.net.
*If two teams make a claim on the same player, the team with the worst winning percentage at the end of that month will receive the player.
Example 1: Team A (.450 win %) and Team B (.480 win %) both submit claims for Hank Aaron. Ruling: Team A will receive Hank Aaron due to its lower winning percentage.
Example 2: Team A (.450 win %) submits claims for Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Bob Gibson, and Tom Seaver, ranked in that order. Team B (.480 win %) submits claims for Joe Morgan, Tom Seaver, Hank Aaron, and Willie Stargell, ranked in that order.
Ruling: Team A will receive Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, and Bob Gibson. Team B will receive Joe Morgan, Tom Seaver, and Willie Stargell. Team A gets Aaron because he was their 1st choice. Team B gets Seaver because he was their 3rd choice vs. Team A’s 4th choice.
Additionally:
*Free agents must be part of a team’s active roster in the month immediately after they’re claimed.
*Released players may be claimed if they have usage remaining.
*Free-agent claims must be made by 11:59 PM local time on the 23rd of the month for players to be eligible to play the following month.
*Claims may be made through the August 23rd free agent acquisition deadline.
*League-run teams will claim free agents as necessary.
*To be eligible for postseason play, free agents must have at least 20 IP/50 PA remaining.
*Free agents may be traded but shall not be on a team’s protected list at the end of the season.
IX. TRADING
The trading of players and draft picks is permitted during two time frames:
*End of the main draft (once announced by the Statistician)
through July 23rd.
*End of the regular season (once announced by the
Statistician) until approximately 24 hours prior to the main draft.
The trade deadline from April through July is 11:59 PM local time on the 23rd. Trades made after the deadline will take effect at the
end of the next month (i.e., a trade made on April 24th will not
take effect until June’s games).
Additionally:
*Trades must be confirmed via email to the Statistician by
both/all Managers/GMs before considered official.
*If the Statistician is involved in a trade, all parties
shall confirm the transaction via email to the Playoff Coordinator.
*If a trade brings a team’s roster above 40 players, that
team must list players being released to get to 40 or below in the confirmation
email.
*AAA players may be traded (see section VII)
*Free agents may be traded (see section VIII) but
Managers/GMs shall inform both the Statistician and the other Manager/GM
that a free agent is involved in the transaction.
*Players traded after the end of the regular season by
playoff qualifiers will remain on their now-former team’s roster through the
postseason.
*There is no trading of Players to be Named Later.
*Ballparks may not be traded.
*League-run teams shall not take part in trades.
X. PLAYER USAGE
BUNT players are limited to their actual major league (MLB)
usage from the past season as follows:
*Starting pitchers (SP) are limited to real-life Games Started (GS).
*Pitchers rated by DMB only as SPs who are used in relief will be limited to 100% of both MLB GS and IP.
*Pitchers rated by DMB as both SP and relievers are limited to 100% of IP. They may start more games than real life must not exceed their MLB IP.
*Batters have unlimited usage if they recorded at least 600 plate appearances (PA) in MLB.
*Batters with 1-599 PA in MLB are limited to their real-life PA plus a 5% usage buffer {new in 2023).
PLAYER RESTRICTIONS, UTILIZATION AND
EXCEPTIONS:
*In terms of SMPI Special Instructions, a player must
record a PA or a fraction of an IP to officially appear in a game.
*Any pitcher may start or relieve regardless of DMB rating,
but they may not do so in the same series.
*Players rated as batters may play any defensive position
except pitcher.
*Pitchers may pinch-run.
*Pitchers may not pinch-hit or play any other position
unless they are rated at another position defensively. A DH rating shall not
allow them to play in the field.
*Players rated as both a batter and pitcher are limited to 100%
of both their MLB IP and PA totals.
*A team shall have at least 4 (four) relief pitchers
available for each road series both in the regular season and the playoffs. At
least 3 (three) of those pitchers shall not have any usage restrictions.
*Players listed as SP on a team’s SMPI shall have at least
3 (three) simulated days off between appearances. This rule does not carry over
from the end of one month to the start of the next month except for:
*The final
game of the regular season to the first game of the Wild Card Series.
*A
one-game playoff at the end of the regular season.
*IP and PA accumulated by a player used incorrectly by an
opposing manager (based on their opponent’s Special Instructions) will not be
counted against that player’s total usage.
XI. SAME-SIDE LIMITATIONS
Batters with Same-Side Limitations (LHB vs. LHP or
RHB vs. RHP) shall receive the designation from the Statistician prior to each
year’s draft. These players will have s-s placed before their last name
in the DMB database (e.g., s-sAaron).
Same-side players shall be ineligible to start or enter a game when a same-side
pitcher is on the mound. The statistical criteria for same-side players are
as follows:
Total AB |
AB vs S-S pitchers |
BA vs S-S pitchers better than BA vs Opp-Side
pitchers by: |
Less than
175 |
No more
than 33/% |
At least
.050 |
Less than
175 |
No more
than 50% |
At least
.100 |
175-249 |
No more
than 25% |
At least
.100 |
250-299 |
No more
than 25% |
At least
.150 |
Additionally:
*If a same-side batter enters the game legally and a
same-side pitcher is brought in, either by a human manager or the AI, the s-s
player does not have to be removed.
*The S-S rules do not apply to AI-managed players, but they
shall only appear in an MP as a defensive replacement or a platoon role.
*Managers must attempt to adhere to the rule even if a
non-pitcher is ejected.
XII. PROTECTED LIST
A protected list composed of not more than 20 (twenty) on-disk, non-AAA players plus all of a team’s AAA players – either on-disk or off-disk – shall be submitted to the Statistician no later than 11:59 PM local time on December 31st. The list may also be uploaded to the Groups.io site. The total number of players on a team’s protected list shall not be more than 25. For every AAA player retained above 5 (five) a team will be able to protect one less on-disk non-AAA player.
*Example 1: The TWI finish the season with 7 (seven) AAA players.
Result: The TWI will be allowed to protect 18 on-disk non-AAA players for a winter roster of 25.
*Example 2: The TWI finish the season with 5 (five) AAA players.
Result: The TWI will be allowed to protect 20 on-disk non-AAA players for a winter roster of 25.
*Example 3: The TWI finish the season with 3 (three) AAA players.
Result: The TWI will be allowed to protect 20 on-disk non-AAA players for a winter roster of 23.
AAA players are
automatically retained on a team’s roster through the end of the regular season
if not released by the July trade/free-agent acquisition deadline.
XII. PENALTIES
The league office will assess penalty points as it sees fit but will in every case be willing to hear an appeal due to extenuating circumstances.
A manager can be assessed specific penalties for:
*Using SPs out of
rotation.
*Using SPs with fewer than 3 days off.
*Using a pitcher as a starter and reliever within the same series.
*Using an incorrect opponent lineup.
*Not following an opponent’s Special Instructions.
*Player overuse.
*Utilizing ineligible players at home (e.g., activating AAA
players, using inactive players, etc.).
*Allowing ineligible players to enter game.
PENALTY POINT, PENALTY ASSESSMENTS:
*Ineligible visiting player enters a game = 1 point AND forfeiture of all games in which the player participated.
a. In the case of a forfeit, the Statistician shall award the Win/Loss decisions to non-pitchers on each team. No save shall be awarded.
b. The final score for the winning team shall be increased
by at least 30 runs in the DMB database, unless the team benefiting from the
forfeit was at home in an extra-inning game (the DMB program will not allow 30
runs to be added to a box score file from the bottom of the 9th
inning on).
c. Forfeit wins/losses will be reversed at the end of the
regular season for the purpose of determining draft positions. Team game
decisions, won or lost, shall be reversed back after the Playoffs (this may
affect net draft order).
d. All statistics shall count, however incorrectly used players’ stats will not count against their usage.
*Pitching out-of-rotation (human or AI mgr.)
*Using incorrect opponent lineup.
*Not following special instructions {1 pt. and loss of game).
PLAYERS OVERUSED PENALTY ASSESSMENTS:
Overused players are NOT allowed to be used the remainder of the season but are eligible for post season games.
*Each player overused = 1 point for each 1 to 20 {New for 2024} PA’s or 0.1 to 3.0 IP overused.
*Forfeiture of each game in which an overused (ineligible) player appeared.
For every 5 (five) penalty points (ppts.) a team
accumulates, that team shall have its highest available draft pick at the time
of the forfeiture voided (including picks acquired by trade). If the team has
multiple picks in a round which could be affected, the higher of the two picks
shall be voided.
Picks voided due to overuse shall be moved to the following
round in the slot directly before the original owner’s scheduled pick.
Example 1: The TWI
accumulate 5 penalty ppts. At the moment they reach 5
ppts. they own all 15 of their draft picks.
Result: The TWI’s first-round draft pick shall be voided. The
selection will move to the 2nd round and be made immediately before the TWI’s Round 2 pick.
Example 2: The TWI accumulate
5 penalty ppts. At the moment they reach 5 ppts. they own all 15 of their draft picks as well as the FIR’s
first-round selection.
Result: One of the TWI’s first-round picks shall be voided. The voided pick
shall be determined at the end of the season when the BUNT draft order is set.
Example 3: The TWI accumulate 5 penalty ppts. At the moment
they reach 5 ppts. they own all 15 of their draft
picks. Later in the season the TWI acquire the FIR’s
first-round selection.
Result: The TWI’s first-round draft pick shall be voided but they
shall keep the FIR’s first-round selection since they did not own it at the
time of the forfeiture.
*If a team owns multiple selections in a round but
accumulates enough ppts. to cause more than one pick to be voided, all of the voided picks from that round will move to the
next round.
XIV. POSTSEASON
The BUNT postseason shall be comprised of three rounds:
Wild Card (WC). League Championship Series (LCS), and World Series (WS). The
postseason qualifiers shall be the four {new for 2024} teams
in each league with the highest winning percentages: a regular-season league
champion and 3 (three) WC teams.
*The team with the best regular-season winning percentage
in each league shall be that league’s regular-season champion. Both that team
and each league’s second-place team shall have home-field advantage (HFA) in
the WC round.
*The WC round winner in each league with the best regular-season winning percentage in each league shall have
HFA in that league’s LCS.
*The postseason shall begin 2 (two) simulated days after
the end of the regular season.
*All postseason rounds shall be best-of-seven in a 2-3-2
format with simulated days off after Games 2 and 5. The team with the higher
winning percentage shall host games 1,2, 6, and 7 except in the WS.
*The AL shall have HFA advantage in the WS in odd-numbered
years. The NL shall have HFA in even-numbered years.
If 2 (two) teams are tied for the best winning percentage
in their league or for the final WC spot, the tie shall be broken using
a one-game playoff. HFA for the one-game playoff shall be determined by the
following criteria (NOTE: forfeits shall be reversed for this process):
2. Best home
record.
3. Best winning
percentage in the final 81 regular-season games.
4. Best winning
percentage in the final 82 regular-season games (provided the game added is not
between the tied teams). Continue one game back until the tie is broken.
If 3 (three) teams are tied for best winning percentage in
their league, the tie shall be broken by the following method (NOTE: forfeits
shall be reversed for this process):
*The team with the highest H2H winning percentage against
the others shall choose whether it will be designated Team A, Team B, or Team
C.
*The team with the second-highest winning percentage in H2H
play against the others shall choose one of the
remaining designations.
*Once designations are assigned, Team A would host Team B
on October 1st (the simulated day after the end of the regular
season).
*The winner of the October 1st game would host
Team C on October 2nd. The winner of the October 2nd game
shall be the regular-season league champion. The losing team shall have HFA in
the WC series vs. the loser of the October 1st game.
If 3 (teams) are tied for the 2 (two) WC spots, the
following process shall take place (NOTE: forfeits shall be reversed for this
process):
*Team A would host Team B on October 1st. The
winner would earn the first WC spot.
*On October 2nd, Team C would host the loser of
the October 1st game. The winner of this game would earn the second
WC spot.
*If the October 1st loser wins the October 2nd
game, the October 1st winner would have HFA in the WC round.
*If Team C wins the October 2nd game, HFA for
the WC shall be determined by the two-team tiebreaker below.
If the 2 (two) WC teams have the same winning percentage,
HFA for their series shall be determined by the following criteria:
1. Head-to-head.
2. Best home record.
3. Best winning percentage in the final 81 regular-season
games.
4. Best winning percentage in the final 82 regular-season
games (provided the game added is not between the tied teams). Continue one
game back until the tie is broken.
Other potential tiebreaker scenarios shall be taken from https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-playoff-tiebreaker-rules.
DEADLINES:
Once postseason matchups have been set and participating teams are notified by the Playoff Coordinator, teams shall have:
*2 days to submit a rotation.
*3 days to submit a Manager Profile.
*7 days to submit box scores from their completed games.
The Playoff Coordinator will notify all postseason
qualifiers of all special requirements and email deadlines as soon as possible
after the regular season has ended. If the Playoff Coordinator is a postseason
participant, the Statistician shall handle his duties. If both the Payoff
Coordinator and the Statistician are playoff participants, a manager who did
not qualify for the postseason shall be asked to handle the Coordinator’s
duties until either the Coordinator or the Statistician is eliminated.
POSTSEASON GAMEPLAY:
Postseason series may be played H2H via DMB’s NetPlay feature or in a three-site method. {New in 2024} Both
teams may also choose to let the Playoff Coordinator sim their series. If
played H2H, managers shall send their completed statistics to the Playoff
Coordinator/acting Coordinator. If played via BUNT’s three-site method, the
following procedures shall be followed:
*Participants in each round shall submit their rotations to
the Playoff Coordinator/acting Coordinator only.
*Once verified, the rotations shall be forwarded to each
participant’s opponent, at which point all teams shall have 3 (three) days to
submit their MP to the Playoff Coordinator/acting Coordinator.
*Once verified, each team shall receive that round’s
postseason database. At this point, each team shall have 7 (seven) days to
complete its games.
*Each team shall play all 7 (seven) games in that series.
The Playoff Coordinator/acting Coordinator shall also simulate all games in the
series using the MPs provided. The team winning a game at two of the three
sites shall be credited with winning that game.
*If a winner is determined prior to Game 7, the remaining
games shall be disregarded.
Additionally:
*Teams using the three-site method shall adhere to the
pitching rotations and lineups laid out in their postseason MP.
*Teams playing H2H may change their pitching rotations
and/or lineups laid out in their postseason MP as long as
they adhere to the BUNT playoff usage limitations.
{New in 2024} If
playoff opponents choose to have the Playoff Coordinator sim their series, both
teams shall submit their MPs within the prescribed deadlines. The series will
be conducted only on the Playoff Coordinator’s computer.
